BLUE LIGHT GLASSES

We've all been experiencing a little more screen time than perhaps we should recently, so we've made it easy to add a blue light filter coating to any of your prescription or non-prescription lenses.

WHAT IS BLUE LIGHT?

Light appears to us on what is known as the visible light spectrum. This is the segment of the electromagnetic spectrum that the human eye can view. Each colour accounts for a differing of energy and wavelength. On that spectrum, blue light is at one end with high energy, shorter wavelengths and red light is at the other with low energy and longer wavelengths. Before technology, we were used to seeing different colours at different times of day — we would expect to see blue light during the day, not at night — but our constant exposure to screens and artificial lighting means we are increasing our exposure to blue wavelengths at the wrong time.

IS BLUE LIGHT BAD?

Not necessarily. Blue light is actually really important and has multiple benefits, including:

SO, WHY DO I NEED TO PROTECT MY EYES FROM BLUE LIGHT?

“THE BRAIN ASSOCIATES BLUE LIGHT AS DAYTIME, SO IF A PERSON IS EXPOSED TO BLUE LIGHT FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME DURING THE NIGHT, BLUE LIGHT MAKES IT MORE DIFFICULT FOR US TO FALL ASLEEP AT NIGHT AND WAKE UP IN THE MORNING”

FAQs

WHY DO I NEED TO PROTECT MY EYES FROM BLUE LIGHT?

Sunlight, contains all the colours of the visible spectrum in balance, and was our only source of light, until humans invented artificial light - fire, oil lamps, the lightbulb, computers… Today in our digital world we are exposed to light on a constant basis, much of it the artificial blue light emitted by devices and light bulbs. Its cumulative effect is having negative impacts on our health, from disturbing our sleep to harming our eyes.

Since the invent of electricity, we've gone from being exposed to light during the day and darkness at night, to increased exposure to artificial light at any hour. Whilst it's quite obviously not natural for us, what is it about blue light that makes it so bad for us?

Over the best part of the last century, we have gone from being exposed only to natural light during the day and darkness at night, to constant artificial light wherever we go. Now, why is this bad? As we spend more time staring at monitors, iPads, and smartphones, we increase the amount of blue light we are exposed to, and that’s where blue light filtering glasses might help. Other than the fact that being bombarded with artificial light all day causes eye strain, dry eyes and even headaches, it can cause problems with your sleep. Too much exposure to blue light at night can suppress the secretion of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep cycles. Whenever we use our digital devices, especially late into the night, we’re actually telling our brains to keep our bodies awake.

CAN I GET BLUE LIGHT LENSES WITH ANY FRAME?

Yes, our blue light filter lenses are available as an add on at checkout for any pair of glasses you've got your eye on.

CAN I HAVE NON-PRESCRIPTION BLUE LIGHT LENSES?

Yes, if you would like to purchase some non-prescription blue light glasses all you to have to do is add your chosen frame to your basket and simply click 'yes' when asked if you require blue light filter lenses.

CAN I GET BLUE LIGHT LENSES PUT INTO MY CURRENT FRAMES?

Yes, this is possible if you already have MONC frames. However, we would need to replace your prescription lenses in order to coat them with blue light filter. There will therefore be this additional cost depending on the type of lenses you require.

DO I NEED BLUE LIGHT LENSES IN MY SUNGLASSES?

No, our sunglasses are UV400 Category 3 optical glass, protecting against 100% UVA and UVB sun rays. You can find out more about our sunglasses lenses here.
