In celebration of the GB Curling teams bringing home silver and gold medals from the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, we thought we’d take a closer look at the craft behind the Olympic Curling stones.

 

MONC - Kay's Curling

 

Every single curling stone used at the Beijing Winter Olympics is made from granite, quarried from the tiny uninhabited Scottish island of Ailsa Craig.

The granite is then taken to Kay’s Curling Workshop, where they’ve been making curling stones for the Winter Olympics since the Chamonix Games in 1924.

The Ailsa Craig granite is some of the hardest and purest in the world, making it perfect for the wet, icy surface curling is played on.
