This week we discovered a design studio - Studio Nienke Hoogvliet which specialises in material research, experimental and conceptual design.

The studio takes on freelance projects as well as self-initiated research and design projects that raise awareness of social and environmental problems in the textile, leather and food industries. By creating innovative material alternatives, they hope to to share the possibilities that sustainable materials have in the design world.

Nienke Hoogvliet, who founded Studio Nienke Hoogvliet in 2013, merges urgent environmental inquiry with an engineer’s design sense and an artist’s inspired creativity.

“When I started, I thought I was a designer, so I wanted to work on things you can actually use, but the longer I’ve worked, the more important the story behind the project has become, and I think that’s more part of being an artist.”

Hoogvliet has made it her job to research, develop and make use of a wide range of sustainable materials. Among them a biodegradable urn, furniture made from reclaimed toilet paper and all sorts of things from seaweed and fish skins.
