This week we’re featuring a design project by Tobias Trübenbacher. ‘Papilio’ is a street lamp designed to change our relationship with street lighting, it’s effect on the environment and light pollution.

The design features a wind turbine which produces renewable energy for the lamp, which lights up only when activated by it’s motion sensors. By harnessing wind as a source of energy, the lamp eliminates the requirement to use any power from the grid.

"In Germany alone, street lightning emits at the moment around 2.5 million tons of CO2 per year." Tobias Trübenbacher in Dezeen (May 2021)
